- The backwaters of Kerala: There are various ways of seeing the backwaters. One is to rent a converted country rice boat called Kettuvallam, the type that used to transport goods down to Kochi. It comes complete with crew, so you can opt out of “real life” to spend a few days being pampered in this watery paradise. If this is too exotic, rent a private boat and driver for the day from Alappuzha and Kottayam; you can be dropped off at one of two upscale waterside hotels at Kumarakom, overlooking Vembanad Lake. Or simply join locals on a public ferry from one town to another. The bigger backwater lies between Kochi and Kollam, where Vembanad Lake spreads over 77 square miles. Known As Kuttanadu, this area is where life is spent beside, on, and often in the water, on narrow slivers of land. Here, in the dense tropical vegetation, families live in brightly painted houses that appear to float on the water.
- Kayankulam: Kayamkulam’s Krishnapuram place is less ornate than Padmanabhapuram but just as interesting. It was probably built by Ramayya Dalawa, who was governor of northern Travancore under Rama Varma; one room off the small interior courts has a beautiful mural of Vishnu riding on Garuda.
